Air Quality Monitoring Programme - CAMP DATA

CAMP - Phase I

Scope : Preliminary assessment of the air quality of the Colombo City using Sulphation Rate (SR) and Dust Fall (DF) to measure the Sulphar and dust level of the ambient air.

Duration : March 1989 - August 1991

Sampling : The Colombo City is divided into 13 planny zones by the Urban Development Authority (UDA). In each planning zone sampling device was sired to every cover industrial, commercial, residential areas and traffic intersections.

The criteria for deterring sampling locations :

Area covered by each unit 70 ha (average)
Population covered by each unit 13000 (average No)
Distance between two adjacent units Km average - 0.8
range - 0.6 - 1.2

A total of 49 locations were selected in the city and sixty units were installed. The number of sampling devices placed, depended on the size of the population and area of the planning zone.

Summary and Conclusion : Out of the 49 locations, 8 stations were identified as having unsatisfactory values, 24 stations as having moderate values and 17 stations as having excellent values of SR and DF for air quality. Unsatisfactory locations were situated near traffic intersections or industrial areas.

CAMP - Phase II

Scope : The Second Phase of the Colombo Air Quality Monitoring Programme (CAMP - II) was started in July 1992 to qualitatively analyze the ambient level of SO2, NO2, Lead and SPM at Seven (07) selected location within the City of Colombo.

Duration : July 1992 - September 1993.

Sampling & Analysis : Locations were selected to cover critical and moderate areas, which was identified by the CAMP - PHASE I study and samples were collected on 8 hourly basis, every 8th day to analyzed SO2, NO2, Lead and SPM in Colombo Air by using wet chemical methods. The sampling locations and the analytical methods were summarized in Table (01) & Table (02) respectively.

Table (01): Locations Description;

L1. Traffic Police Station , Colombo 11.
L2. Sarasavipaya, Maradana Juntion, Colombo 10.
L3. Lanka Tractors Ltd, Nawala Road, Colombo 05.

L5. Aitken Spence (Pvt) Ltd, Sri Wickrama Mawatha, Colombo 15.
L6. Milagiriya Church, Colombo 04.
L7. Academy of Administration Studies, Longdon Place, Colombo 07.

Table (02): Pollution Parameter and Analytical Methods;
