Geotechnical
Engineering Division
(GED)
Introduction
The major task of the Geo-technical
Engineering Division (GED) is to conduct research in the fields of
soil mechanics, engineering geology and foundation designs which have
a direct relevance to local needs. The GED also provides
Geotechnical Investigation Services to both the public and private
sectors. Areas that need further research and development are often
identified in the process of providing such services to the
construction industry.
Some of the special work handled by the GED
includes consultancy services in foundation designs of
multi-storied, residential, commercial and industrial buildings,
bridges, jetties, water towers, reservoirs, water supply schemes,
oil storage tanks, transmission towers, highways, rail roads,
airport runways etc, and geotechnical investigations of marshy areas
for reclamation, offshore drilling for harbour/jetty construction,
rock bolting to stabilize unstable rock slopes, investigations of
cracked buildings and recommendations on remedial measures and
stability analysis of slopes.
GED undertakes comprehensive subsoil
investigation reports for foundation design of buildings and other
structures which includes an extensive range of laboratory testing
of soil for physical and mechanical properties. It also provides
special consultancy services for construction, particularly on peaty
sub-soils, expansive soils and residual soils, expert advise on
special foundation techniques including ground improvement, under
planning, micro piling, under reamed piling, quality control in land
reclamation and development, restoration of distressed foundations.
