Human Settlements Division (HSD)

Introduction

The Human Settlement Division (HSD) caters to the needs of socio-economic and physical planning aspects of the shelter sector, with special emphasis on disaster prone areas and under-served settlements.

Services Offered
  • Research studies on planning and design aspects of housing for evolving cost effective and functionally efficient design alternatives especially for low and middle income groups.
  • Monitoring and evaluation studies on programmes and projects implemented for improvement of socio-economic and physical conditions of human settlements.
  • Carry-out micro-level and analytical studies on human settlements and physical resources using specialized skills and aerial photo interpretation and computer sided analysis.
  • Carry-out research studies on human settlements related services for identification of constraints and potential in their development, in order to promote the efficiency of human settlements.
  • Research studies on human settlements in disaster prone areas.
  • Carry-out micro level community based infrastructure development, quality of life improvement, disaster risk reduction studies and projects.
  • Human settlements studies on EIAs for construction and shelter related research projects.
  • Training programmes on cost effective housing layout planning and community based housing.
  • Land identification for projects such as housing, solid waste disposal etc..
  • Evaluation studies of human settlements and housing.
  • Resettlements and rehabilitation projects including urban regeneration projects.

  • Identification of land for solid waste disposal in the Greater Colombo Area.
  • Land-use and human activities survey in Beira Lake restoration project.
  • Feasibility study of rail transfer of solid waste to the proposed Padukka site.
