Building Materials Division (BMD) is housed in a building which was once the oldest centre of building research in Sri Lanka.  In 1984 the Building Materials Laboratory was upgraded with the assistance of the UNDP.  Subsequently, in 1996, 2006 and 2007 the range of testing equipment was augmented with the financial assistance received under a grant from the IDA, JICA & GTZ respectively.

BMD assists the industry in the implementation of testing and quality control functions, disseminates information and research findings and provides know-how, guidance and training to the construction and building materials manufacturing industry.
