NBRO has been in existence since 1984 with the main objective of conducting Research & Development work in the diverse areas catering national development in Sri Lanka.
Multidisciplinary services provided by NBRO which include a wide range of subject from geo-technological engineering investigation, evaluation of air & water quality assessment and EIA, consultancy & testing for building material quality, human settlement planning & landslide hazard mapping enlighten the approach to R & D issues in the country. Together it would be hard to find all such service to the nation encompassing under one roof in a such institution.
Since 1984, NBRO has been making significant contribution to the housing sector. In this context, NBRO has contributed its share in placing before the country, appropriate cost effective and alternative technology in housing as well as in materials, along with suitable designs for shelter sector. NBRO was involved in the introduction of affordable housing techniques working alongside with CHPB and NHDA.
Providing these decant service to the society and this government in committed to accomplish this valued tenet of “Mahinda Chinthana” and NBRO will be required to make its own contribution in the province of housing and disaster sector risk reduction activities.
Most of the achievement of NBRO to more concern to Disaster Management and Mitigation Process after the change of Ministries in 2007. Landslide Hazard Mapping Project of the landslide prone districts is one of the significant achievements that NBRO has made to date. Landslide Hazard Zonation Mapping Project of the landslide prone districts of the country and has been responsible for advisory service in landslide awareness creation, early warning and preparation of guideline for construction sector and mitigation process.
