Recent heavy rains and consequent floods and landslides brought disastrous outcomes to the western and southern regions of the island with heavy losses to life and properties. Quite a number of landslides and cutting failures have been reported over the past two weeks, Rathnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, Hambantota, and Kegalle districts being the most distressed due to this severe weather condition.

Neluwa, Morawakakanda, Bulathsinhala, Baduraliya, Yakupitiya, Kiribathgala, Dewoldola, and Toranagodaare some of the most disastrous landslide locations, which have resulted in high death tolls. Following the heavy rainfall, landslide warnings are being still issued for Kalutara, Ratnapura, Galle and Kegalle districts by National Building Research Organisation.

National Building Research Organisation has been exerting their fullest efforts to address the situation at hand. NBRO officials are daily engaged in special landslide investigation work in the affected districts with the hopes of preventing further damage to the risked communities.2069 special landslide investigation requests have been received by NBRO while 1154 of them have been investigated as of 19th June, 2017.

Though necessary actions have been notably delayed due to floods and damaged road sections, NBRO has been able to speed up the workload by delegating more officers to continue with investigations work while taking necessary and timely actions to ensure the safety of the people in affected areas. Owing to the demanding nature of the post-disaster situation in the country, NBRO has further sought assistance from other institutes like Geological Surveys and Mines Bureau, University of Moratuwa, University of Peradeniya and Central Engineering Consultancy Bureau to join hands with them in special landslide investigation work.
