Damage Assessment of Recent Landslide Events in Sri Lanka

Heavy rainfall across the country since 14th May 2017 resulted in severe landslides and floods in fifteen (15) districts. Disaster Management Center has reported (as at 04.06.2017) 212 deaths, 79 missing and around 717,622 people belonging to 184,265 families affected due to the flood and landslide situation, and further, over 2,313 houses fully destroyed and around 12,529 houses partially damaged.

NBRO initiated a programme to assess each landslide occurred in order to estimate the damage and the economic loss. The assessment was carried out for thirty eight (38) landslide incident sites identified in Ratnapura, Kegalle, Matara, Kalutara, Colombo and Galle districts. The assessment carried out by analyzing the Ortho image and Digital Elevation Model (DEM) developed through drone images captured from relevant sites and data collected through a survey for the purpose of studying the impacts on human lives, fully and partially damaged buildings and damages to infrastructure.

Information captured through the assessment will be provided to District Secretariats which will be then used in post disaster activities.
