Landslide Studies &
Services Division
Introduction
The Landslide Studies & Services Division of
National Building Research Organization
(NBRO) was established in 1992 incorporating landslide studies,
consultancy services and Landslide Hazard Mapping Project (LHMP).
Capabilities of the Division
- Staff able to handle multi disciplinary
tasks
- Fully equipped modern
GIS Unit
- Cartographic/CAD Unit with modern
technology
- Monitoring instruments capable to handle
any project related to GIS, slope stability, geology,
geotechnical engineering work and remote sensing.
Objectives
- Execute landslide hazard mapping work in
landslide prone districts of Sri Lanka.
- Introduction of standard guidelines and
codes of practices for human settlement planning and site
selection in hilly areas vulnerable to landslides.
- Provide consultancy services in respect
of landslide investigations (instrumentation and monitoring),
slope stability analysis, geotechnical testing and design of
preventive and corrective measures.
- Foster community participation in
creating public awareness about causative factors of landslides
and provide training in the aspect of landslide disaster
management.
- Computer workshops and GIS projects.
Services Offered
-
Mapping of problematic slopes in
landslide prone areas of Sri Lanka. Preparation of landslide
hazard zonation maps which can be used as a planning tool for
sustainable development in the hilly areas of Sri Lanka.
- Geophysical investigations which can be
used as a cheap source for acquiring subsurface data.
- Consultancy services on constructions in
hilly areas and development of appropriate early warning systems.
- Design of cost effective, preventive and
corrective measures with respect to landslides.
- Conducting of awareness programmes for
natural disaster mitigation.
- Development of practical indicators for
slope instability in landslide prone areas.

Ongoing Projects
Proposed Projects
- Identification and application of
appropriate remedial measures for landslides/landslide risk areas
affected to national roads/railway network in the hilly areas of
Sri Lanka.
- Landslide Disaster Management in the
Central hills through establishment of appropriate engineering
practices.
- Development of low cost housing methods
and low-cost mitigations of slope instability for estate housing
programme.
- Monitoring and forecasting the movements
of unstable slopes using geophysical methods and global
positioning satellites.
- Risk base assessment in landslide prone
areas in Sri Lanla, considering the infrastructure facilities,
human settlement and land-use.
- Introduction of standards guidelines and
codes of practices for human settlement planning and site
selection in hilly areas to landslides.
GIS Unit of LSSD
|
The GIS unit of the Landslide
Studies and Services Division has been established to facilitate its
landslide hazard zonation mapping. This unit is currently equipped
with A0 and A1 size digitizers, A0 size inkjet plotter and
compatible system units. PC ARC/INFO. Arc View and Ilwis are the GIS
software used. The staff is well trained to offer its services in
data capturing, data analyzing and plotting to other Public and
Private Sector organisations, as well. for more details
