LANDSLIDE HAZARD ZONATION MAPPING
Landslide hazard zonation maps are
prepared at NBRO by integrating the individual contributions made by
factors such as;
|
(I) bedrock geology |
|
(II) hydrology & drainage |
|
(III) surface overburden |
|
(IV) slope angle range |
|
(V) land use |
|
(VI) land forms |
In these maps, zones that are
labeled as
|
(1) landslides are expected |
|
(2) modest level of landslide hazard
exists |
|
(3) landslides are not likely to occur |
|
(4) safe slopes indicate the
distribution of relative landslide potential in a given area.
|
The scope of the NBRO’s mapping
programme was to generate landslide hazard zonation maps that can be
utilized in the process of development to identify the potential
landslide hazard in the mountainous area of the country. The
landslide hazard zonation maps are available at 1:50,000 scale
covering the districts of Matale, Kandy, Kegalle, Nuwara Eliya, and
Ratnapura. 1: 10,000 scale maps are also available for selected
areas in Badulla and other districts listed above.
