Research Profile
The Environmental Division of National Building Research Organisation was established in January 1986. The research activities of the division are aimed at providing technical support to various state agencies of the Ministries of Urban Development, Construction and Public Utilities, and the Forestry and Environment etc.
Being the only research organisation established under the Ministry of
Housing and Construction Industries, Eastern Province Education and Irrigation
development, our research programs are designed to provide necessary research infrastructure for the areas of urban environmental quality protection and management.
The division's fully equipped modern laboratory, accredited by the Central Environmental Authority, and electronic data evaluation system managed by an expert team of scientists provide scientific infrastructure required to sustain research programs of the division.

The organisation research programs are focused on the mission of the
Ministry of Housing and
Construction Industries, Eastern Province Education and Irrigation development,.
The Ministry allocates funds to NBRO under Public Investment Program (PIP) to carry out research programs.
All the research programs carried out within NBRO are steered by the Central Research Committee. The Committee comprised of a multidisciplinary team of national level experts and is chaired by the Director General, NBRO.
A Sub Committee composed of relevant experts in the research committee supervises each research program. The research proposals and the progress of the programs are evaluated monthly and quarterly by these sub committees and the main committee respectively.
The research activities of the Division are carried out in three main units under the coordination of specialized team of scientists.
These three units are as follows;
- Air Quality Studies Unit
- Water Quality Studies and Services Unit
- Special Environmental Studies Unit
Current research programs of the division fall in to following three major categories
- Research in environmental quality monitoring and modeling
- Environmental studies related to construction sector
- Environmental studies related to urban development

Several sources of funding are made available annually to conduct research programs in the Division.
- Funding from Government of Sri Lanka (GOSL) under the Public Investment Program (PIP)
The Ministry of Housing and Construction Industries, Eastern Province Education
and Irrigation development, annually allocates grants for research activities especially in the areas of urban development and construction sector.
- Ambient air quality monitoring studies are supported through the financial support through the Ministry of Forestry and Environment.
- Funding is available through National Water Supply and Drainage Board to operate Greater Colombo Pipe Borne Drinking Water Quality Surveillance Program.
- Research grant worth of Rs 4.8 million has been granted in year 2000 by the National Research Council, to establish a low cost passive sampling air quality monitoring network in Colombo.
Altogether, the division receives approximately Rs 9 million per annum as research grants & consultancy payments to sustain its programs in the above fields.

Environmental Division Research
Team Structure |
Research programs in the division operate under the Senior Technical Head of the Division. The research programs are coordinated by co coordinators/team leaders who are specialized in relevant environmental disciplines.

Staff of
air quality and water quality studies units as required by the project
inputs on specialized fields required for this unit will be obtained from other 2 units of the environmental division, other technical divisions of the organization and from outside research based institutions.
