Land subsidence occurrences of considerable magnitude were reported in Sri Lanka in Matale area in the recent past. National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) being a premier research institute under the purview of the Ministry of Disaster Management and also being the national focal point for landslide related studies in Sri Lanka presently conduct studies on major geo hazards like landslides and rock falls. Land subsidence recorded after a heavy rainfall in mid of December 2012 at Thotagamuwain Mataledistrictwas significant and thus necessitated the need for more comprehensivestudies on ground subsidence phenomenon.
