Kick off workshop on the collaborative research project by Bath University, United Kingdom; University of Moratuwa, and National Building Research Organisation titled “Safer Communities with Hydro-Meteorological Disaster Resilient Houses” was held on 22nd May 2018 at the NBRO Auditorium. Senior academics of the universities and senior officials from several government institutions attended the workshop.

Aim of this project is to build disaster resilience of vulnerable communities in Sri Lanka by developing strategies that will improve the resilience of low rise masonry structures to withstand flood events. While working with scientists in different disciplines in Sri Lanka the project will employ inter-disciplinary approaches to address the questions posed by post-disaster reconstruction. The project will develop collaboration with the best overseas researchers from University of Bath to encourage new alliances with expert academics at the University of Moratuwa.

A need was highlighted to promote NBROs’ construction guidelines and type plans within the communities to enhance resilience of their housing construction. It was also proposed to update and publish the 2nd Edition of the ‘Hazard Resilient Housing Construction Manual’ with reference to the Flood Resilient Human Settlements in Sri Lanka.
