NGI Team Visit Sri Lanka

Under the ongoing technical cooperation project between the National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) and Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), delegates from NGI, Dr. Rajinder Kumar Bhasin, Dr. Fan-Nian Kong and Mr. Pawel Jankowski visited to Sri Lanka from 26th August to 3rd September, 2018.

Under this programme, geotechnical site investigations have been performed in Anuradhapura using the non-destructive Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) technology. This work is performed considering the request received from Strategic Cities Development Project (SCDP) and Department of Archeology since it is important for ‘National Heritage Conservation’ and disaster mitigation. The project is supported by Royal Norwegian Embassy and the partners are using the technology developed at NGI by renowned scientist Dr. Fan-Nian Kong. He is the inventor of NGI’s GPR technology and has worked on various prestigious projects which include working with the famous Norwegian Explorer Thor Heyerdahl for unearthing archeological treasures (artifacts) in Peru and in Tenerife Spain.

The Counselor of Royal Norwegian Embassy is also participated during these  investigations and results of the survey were presented by NBRO-NGI officers.

NBRO officers had also been trained for post processing of GPR technology by  Dr. Fan-Nian Kong. Further, NGI – NBRO cooperation will lead to further monitoring of landslides and subsidence through Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) System and introduce the “Safe Land” Concept to the country.
