A landslide reactivates at Hapuwela in Nuwara Eliya District

A landslide occurred on 10th of November 2018 at Hapuwala in Hanguranketha DivisionalSecretariat of Nuwara Eliya district.

This landslide was a reactivation of a previous landslide that NBRO first observed at this location in December 2014. Having noticed the landslide instability, NBRO initiated measures to permanently evacuate about 15 households in the vicinity falling under potential risk.

Site investigations revealed the presence of a marble layer on the upper slope. Gradual deposition of mud particles together with ground water within the solution cavities in the marble layer may have developed a high pore pressure, leading to the eruption of mud filled cavities, creating a mudflow. At the moment, the mudflow flowing downslope into the valley area beneath and down across the valley has subsided at present. With rains, the landslide can reactivate resulting another mudflow.
