National Building Research Organisation (NBRO) has taken initiative to implement a project on “Nature Based Landslide Risk Management”, with the technical assistance from Asian Disaster Preparedness Center (ADPC), Thailand. This Analytics and Advisory Services project is funded by the World Bank and aims at raising the awareness on the subject and deepen the knowledge within the country on the role of nature based solutions for landslide risk management.

This project has been implemented since April 2018 and planned to be ended in May 2019. Considering the importance of this project and nature of the landslides in Sri Lanka, The World Bank has extended its willingness to fund the Phase II of the project from May 2019.

Accordingly an Inception Meeting on Nature Based Landslide Risk Management Project Phase II was held on 4th June 2019 at NBRO auditorium with the participation of NBRO Officers, World Bank Team and ADPC Officers and Technical Consultants Team of the Project.

The preliminary objective of the Phase II of the project is to demonstrate the process of utilizing the exposure databases (covering high landslide hazard areas in four (04) districts, namely Nuwara Eliya, Matale, Ratnapura and Galle), in delivering site specific landslide mitigation plans through application of nature based solutions and hybrid solutions, when and where most appropriate, and promoting capacity building and knowledge networking.
