Poor urban air quality is one of the major environmental problem that we face during last few months in Sri Lanka. The previous assessments by NBRO have identified vehicular emission as the highest contributor to poor air quality in urban areas in addition to ndustrial, commercial and domestic emissions. When the movement of vehicles was reduced to almost zero since March 12 in the country upon impose of island wide curfew to minimize Covid 19 viruses infection spared, air quality in most of the urban areas were improved a lot better. According to the Particulate Matter (PM2.5 & PM10) levels measurements obtained by NBRO sampling unit at Colombo 07 (MET Department Site, Colombo 07), the 24 hour average PM2.5 and PM10 levels were comparatively high in March 2020 than that of 2019 up to 10 th March, but, the levels have gradually reduced compared to corresponding values of 2019. The reduction of PM2.5 and PM10 levels during the later part of March 2020 wasabout 15% and 25 % respectively.
