Risk of landslide occurrences in the country have been increased with the activation of the southwest monsoon in May, 2020. Due to the rains brought by monsoon winds has affected the several hilly districts of the country such as Kegalle, Ratnapura, Nuwaraeliya, Kalutara etc. As per the recorded incidents occurred in last few days, it shows that the districts of Kegalle and Ratnapura have been severely affected.

Landslide disaster incidents have been reported in Kegalle Divisional Secretariat Division of the Kegalle District. A landslide has been occurred in Waldeniya area with recording of a one death. Seventeen cut slope failures have been reported in places such as Golahela, Ranawala, Hiriwadunna. A major rock fall has been detected at Siyambalapitiya Road, Ranwala and four houses with eight families have been evacuated. The number of rock fall incidents recorded so far is 7.

Slope failures, cut slope failures and rock falls have been reported in the Rathnapura District due to heavy rains received during last few days. Two deaths were reported, one from Bataewala Grama Niladhari Division of Ratnapura Divisional Secretariat Division due to a landslide and the house was totally damaged. The other death was reported from Beranduwa GN Division of Pelmadulla Divisional Secretariat Division.

In addition several cut slope failures along the main roads of Ratnapura Wewalwatta Road and Rtanapura-Badulla road have been reported. It is reported that several past landslides have also been reactivated.
