HEAVY RAINS TRIGGER FATAL LANDSLIDES EARTH CUT FAILURES AND ROCKFALLS IN KEGALLE AND KURUNEGALA DISTRICTS 1

With the heavy rains that continued throughout the past week, NBRO has been regularly issuing landslide early warnings and updates for many districts. Warnings had been issued to many districts (Badulla, Colombo, Galle, Gampaha, Kalutara, Kandy, Kegalle, Kurunegala, Matale, Nuwara Eliya and Ratnapura) on 8th and 9th November, days on which several fatal landslides, cutting failures and rock fall incidents had occurred in Kegalle and Kurunegala districts.

In Kegalle district, a landslide has occurred around 05.00 a.m. on 9th November 2021 in Dambulla Grama Niladhari Division belonging to Rambukkana Divisional Secretariat Division. One house has been fully destroyed by the incident resulting in three deaths and one injury. The destroyed house is a one that had been previously identified as high risk by the NBRO and recommended for resettlement at a safer location. Unfortunately, the residents’ refusal to move from the location has led to these fatalities and injuries eventually. In addition, two people are reported missing due to a slope failure occurred in Pussella area in Galigamuwa Divisional Secretariat Division on 10th November. One injured person has been rescued and hospitalized.

Three major incidents have been recorded in Kurunegala district as well. One is a slope failure which has occurred around 2.30a.m on 9th November 2021 in Aragoda Grama Niladhari Division belonging to Polgahawela Divisional Secretariat Division. Two houses have been completely destroyed by the incident and one person has been injured. Fortunately no fatalities have occurred at the place. Another incident is a cutting failure in Wennoruwa West Grama Niladhari Division belonging to Alawwa Divisional Secretariat Division. The incident has occurred around 01.00a.m on 9th November 2021 fully destroying a house and causing one death. The other incident is a rock-fall occurred on 10th November in Dondangoda area in Korossa Grama Niladhari Division belonging to Rideegama Divisional Secretariat Division. The incident has caused two deaths.

Apart from the major incidents aforementioned, numerous other incidents have been recorded in the above districts. NBRO officials continue to efficiently and effectively respond to public requests by conducting field investigations at risk locations, with the aim of ensuring the safety of lives.
