Proposed conceptual plan for Ohiya Railway Station Development

National Building Research Organization (NBRO) has proposed a comprehensive and precipitous approach to reduce landslide risk covering all the landslide vulnerable districts of Sri Lanka with the funding of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB).  Consequently, for the accentuation, 147 locations had been identified as the potential landslide vulnerable locations, and mitigation is prescient and thoroughly emphasized to harness the development capacities affiliated with each location, facilitating or generating space for such development potentials to take place on the ground. Hence, through a sub proposal, it is made to integrate potential development activities into the landslide mitigation; which would make available more socioeconomic welfare to the society along with the landslide risk depletion.

Issuing Geotechnical Clearance for Assessing the Impacts on Adjacent Structures

National Building Research Organization (NBRO) receives requests from developers for their building construction activities through Project Approving Agencies for obtaining a clearance from NBRO for the proposed development activities including pilling and deep excavation. The main objective the clearance is to assess the impacts of a particular proposed development to adjacent properties and surrounding environment especially during the construction of the building.

The Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) was developed by NBRO to standardize the activities performed under the Geotechnical Clearances Process. This document will provide step by step procedure for each and every activities of the programme.

STAGES OF THE APPLICATION -- 03 Main Types of Clearances;

Category 01 Application [C1] “Preliminary Clearance”

In cases where the developer requires specific guidance during the pre-construction stage of the development and/or developer has not conducted detail investigation/ designs and calculations, the NBRO issues a Preliminary Clearance with recommendations for the developer to carry out its pre-construction work without delaying the process upon the request of respective project approving agency.

NBRO Established 16 Community Based Disaster Risks Management  Committees in Rathnapura District

Landslide risk profile development project is implemented by the NBRO in partnership with the District and Divisional Secretariats of Badulla, Nuwara Eliya, Kandy, Matale Kegalle, Ratnapura, Kalutara, Galle, Matara, and Hambantota districts. The project was initiated in Ratnapura district, which is one of the highly impacted district by landslide. Spatial database on buildings that are located within landslide hazard zones (i.e. 1. landslides are most likely to occur, 2. landslides are to be expected, 3. landslides have been occurred in past, and 4. subsidence & rock fall) was established in Ratnapura District. As the next step, community based landslide risk reduction interventions were initiated. Aim of this initiative is to educate the vulnerable communities on landslide susceptibility and embed good slope management practices to protect against landslide risk. Intention of this community based landslide risk reduction initiative is to support the District Disaster Management Unit of Ratnapura to carry out awareness building among communities, where such programmes had not been carried out before. NBRO established 16 committees in 9 divisional secretary division of Ratnapura district.

Fire erupts in a restaurant in the Mini Pavilion at Race
Course Ground, Colombo-7.

A team of National Building Research Organization (NBRO) consisting with Civil Engineers and Material Engineers visited the fire erupted building on 20th, 21st and 22nd November 2021.It was reported that the fire has initiated around 5:30 am in a restaurant on the Ground Floor of the Mini Pavilion at Race Course Ground in Colombo-7.According to the observations made by NBRO team, significant damage to items inside the restaurant was observed.

Preliminary observations indicated that the structural stability of the building is not significantly affected. However, in order to ascertain structural adequacy and long-term serviceability of the building structure, it was decided by the NBRO Investigation Team to conduct a detailed structural appraisal of the building which included determination of strength properties and durability characteristics of the building.

However, in order to ensure long-term durability and serviceability of the affected building components, repairs and rectification works were recommended by the NBRO.

Crack Surveying

Most of the newly constructed structures have basements that require massive excavation, and rock blasting during the construction. Therefore, impacts on adjacent structures have been increased due to the construction of new building projects without taking any stipulated precautions for vibrations, the drift of soil under the existing adjacent buildings, water table fluctuation, and the settlement of existing adjacent buildings due to added stress by the new building construction. Further to that, cracks can be appeared due to the in-build construction faults of the structures, such as corrosion of embedded reinforcement, chemical deterioration, and adverse loading being applied to the structure.

In this context, the Urban Development Authority (UDA), Department of Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management (CCD) and Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA), and several other project approval agencies have requested National Building Research Organization (NBRO) to assist them in clearance process related to geotechnical matters. Accordingly, a crack survey is one of the components of the clearance process.

The purpose of the crack survey is to the documentation of existing cracks, any changes to the previously identified cracks, and the identification of new cracks in the building or structure. Mainly the crack surveying is done before the construction (pre-construction survey) and after the construction (post-construction survey). Sometimes there may be an intermediate crack surveying to monitor the crack development.

"Many of the theoretical lessons learned over four years of university life are applied in a more practical setting here. Aside from that, I enjoy learning how to deal with different personalities, how to intertwine the processes behind even the smallest tasks, how to do humanitarian service beyond duty, how to love what we do, and how to learn something new from everything we do. Not only that, but through this organization, I found a role model in my professional life among the huge professional characters who lead everything in a friendly working environment... This institution's guidance is invaluable in making every endeavour logical, exploratory, and successful to the end beyond what appears to be. Finally, after nearly three months of training at NBRO, I learned and continue to learn. I will continue to learn a great deal."

"The pandemic has immensely impacted every citizen of this universe most diversely, I was not an exemption to this case as we had to learn most of our academic curriculum through the online platform by which we missed the opportunity of practical based learning.
